About College
The start was slow but the inertia was explosive as is evident from the history of Government College of Science, Raipur,
which was founded in the year 1948. The barracks near the Old Museum and the Government High School were the stepping-stones
from where the journey of Higher Education in Science in Central India was started.
Late Prof. Umadas Mukherji was the Founder Principal who was given the responsibility to start the
College of Science from the minimum of every thing. To begin with, the college was affiliated to the Sagar University Sagar
imparted 2 year education, called Intermediate Science (I. Sc.), which was upgraded to graduate level in 1950. The initial
enrollment was 126. Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths were the only options available at the U.G. level. In the year 1956,
a new wave started with the commencement of P.G. classes in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Hindi (1960),
English, Economics and History (1961) were introduced at the P.G. level but this drift was for a short period and ended in 1975.
Soon the college returned to the original discipline of “Science”. Of the two new subjects, Geology was introduced at the U.G.
level in 1956 and P.G. level in 1967 while Defence Studies was introduced at U.G. level 1972 and P.G. level 1987. The institution
attained the status of Model Science College in 1984 and became Autonomous in 1987. It has the privilege of being the Leading
College of Chhattishgarh.
Subjects
Conventional Vs Non conventional,
Vocational Vs Non vocational.
Personally we do not believe in labeling subjects as conventional or non-conventional, vocational or
non-vocational because for us a subject is a subject. The quality of teaching and the potential of
students determine the utility of the subjects. The institution currently has combinations at the U.G.
level based on a cafeteria approach.
The college has 7 subjects at the P.G. level includes, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Defence Studies,
Mathematics, Geology and Biotechnology.
